‘God, We Praise You for the Morning’ Songs for a Gospel People #79
Greeting
Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God,
the
fountain of living water,
the
rock who gave us birth,
Almighty God,
to
whom all hearts are open,
all
desires known,
and
from whom no secrets are hid:
cleanse
the thoughts of our hearts
by
the inspiration of your Holy Spirit,
that
we may perfectly love you
and
worthily magnify your holy name,
through
Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Canticle
‘Glory, Glory in the Highest’ Common Praise #366
Collect of the Day
Let us pray.
God beyond all seeing and knowing,
we meet you in the
night of change and crisis
and wrestle with you
in darkness and doubt.
Give us the will and
spirit to live faithfully
and to love as we
are loved,
The Proclamation of the
Word of God
The First Reading
A Reading from Genesis (32.22-32).
The
same night [Jacob] got up and took his two wives, his two maids, and his eleven
children, and crossed the ford of the Jabbok. He took them and sent them across the stream,
and likewise everything that he had. Jacob was left alone; and a man wrestled with
him until daybreak. When the man saw
that he did not prevail against Jacob, he struck him on the hip socket; and
Jacob’s hip was put out of joint as he wrestled with him. Then he said, “Let me go, for the day is
breaking.” But Jacob said, “I will not let
you go, unless you bless me.” So he said
to him, “What is your name?” And he
said, “Jacob.” Then the man said, “You
shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and
with humans, and have prevailed.” Then
Jacob asked him, “Please tell me your name.” But he said, “Why is it that you ask my name?”
And there he blessed him. So Jacob called the place Peniel, saying, “For
I have seen God face to face, and yet my life is preserved.” The sun rose upon him as he passed Penuel,
limping because of his hip. Therefore to
this day the Israelites do not eat the thigh muscle that is on the hip socket,
because he struck Jacob on the hip socket at the thigh muscle.

The Psalm of the Day
Psalm 17.1-7, 15 with refrain from Songs for
the Holy One
Refrain (sung twice): Guard
and guide us in the way of peace, O Holy One.
1 Hear my plea of innocence, O
Lord; give heed to my cry; *
listen to my
prayer, which does not come from lying lips.
2
Let my vindication come forth from your
presence; *
let your eyes be fixed on justice.
3
Weigh my heart, summon me by night, *
melt me down;
you will find no impurity in me.
4
I give no offence with my mouth as
others do; *
I have heeded the words of your
lips.
Refrain:
Guard and guide us in the way of
peace, O Holy One.
5
My footsteps hold fast to the ways of your law; *
in your paths
my feet shall not stumble.
6
I call upon you, O God, for you will
answer me; *
incline your ear to me and hear my
words.
7
Show me your marvellous loving-kindness, *
O Saviour of
those who take refuge at your side
from those who
rise up against them.
15 But at my vindication I shall see your face; *
when I awake, I shall be satisfied,
beholding your likeness.
Refrain:
Guard and guide us in the way of
peace, O Holy One.
The Second Reading
A Reading from the Letter to the Romans
(9.1-5).
I
am speaking the truth in Christ — I am not lying; my conscience confirms it by
the Holy Spirit — I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. For I could wish that I myself were accursed
and cut off from Christ for the sake of my own people, my kindred according to
the flesh. They are Israelites, and to
them belong the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the
worship, and the promises; to them belong the patriarchs, and from them,
according to the flesh, comes the Messiah, who is over all, God blessed
forever. Amen.
Hear what the Spirit is saying to the
church.
Thanks
be to God.
Hymn before the Gospel
‘Here, Lord, We Take the Broken Bread’ Common Praise #65
The Gospel
The Lord be with you.
And
also with you.
The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ
according to Matthew (14.13-21).
Glory
to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
Now
when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat to a deserted place by
himself. But when the crowds heard it,
they followed him on foot from the towns. When he went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and
he had compassion for them and cured their sick. When it was evening, the disciples came to him
and said, “This is a deserted place, and the hour is now late; send the crowds
away so that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves.” Jesus said to them, “They need not go away;
you give them something to eat.” They
replied, “We have nothing here but five loaves and two fish.” And he said, “Bring them here to me.” Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the
grass. Taking the five loaves and the
two fish, he looked up to heaven, and blessed and broke the loaves, and gave
them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. And all ate and were filled; and they took up
what was left over of the broken pieces, twelve baskets full. And those who ate were about five thousand
men, besides women and children.
The Gospel of Christ.
Praise
to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
The Sermon
An Affirmation of Faith
Let us declare our
faith in God.
We believe in God,
the Source of all life and love,
from whom every family
in heaven and earth is named.
We believe in God,
the eternal Word of redemption,
who lives in our hearts through faith,
and fills us with steadfast love.
We believe in God,
the Spirit of wisdom and truth,
who strengthens us
with power from on high.
We believe in one God:

The Prayer over the Gifts
Let us pray.
Holy God, gracious and merciful,
you
bring forth food from the earth
and
nourish your whole creation.
Turn
our hearts toward those
who
hunger in any way,
so
that all may know your care;
and
prepare us now
to
feast on the bread of life,
The Thanksgiving at the Table
The Lord be with you.
And
also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We
lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It
is right to give our thanks and praise.
Blessed are
you, gracious God,
creator of
heaven and earth;
you are the
source of light and life for all your creation,
you made us
in your own image,
and call us
to new life in Jesus Christ our Saviour.
Therefore we
praise you,
Holy,
holy, holy Lord,
God
of power and might.
Heaven
and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna
in the highest.
Blessed
is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Holy God, you
alone are holy, you alone are God.
The universe
declares your praise:
beyond the stars;
beneath the sea; within each cell; with every breath.
We praise you, O God.
Generations bless
your faithfulness:
through the water;
by night and day;
across the
wilderness; out of exile; into the future.
We bless you, O God.
We give you thanks
for your dear Son:
at the heart of
human life; near to those who suffer;
beside the sinner;
among the poor; with us now.
We thank you, O God.
In the night in
which he was betrayed,
our Lord Jesus
took bread, and gave thanks;
broke it, and gave
it to his disciples, saying:
Take and eat; this
is my body, given for you.
Do this for the
remembrance of me.
Again, after
supper, he took the cup, gave thanks,
and gave it for
all to drink, saying:
This cup is the
new covenant in my blood,
shed for you and
for all people for the forgiveness of sin.
Do this for the
remembrance of me.
Remembering his
love for us on the way,
at the table, and
to the end,
we proclaim the
mystery of faith.
Christ has died.
Christ is risen. Christ will come
again.
We pray for the
gift of your Spirit:
in our gathering;
within this meal;
among your people;
throughout the world.
Blessing, praise
and thanks to you, holy God,
through Christ
Jesus, by your Spirit,
in your church,
without end.
Amen. [vii]
The Lord’s Prayer
As our Saviour taught us, let us pray,
Our
Father in heaven,
hallowed
be your name,
your
kingdom come,
your
will be done,
on
earth as in heaven.
Give
us today our daily bread.
Forgive
us our sins
as
we forgive those who sin against us.
Save
us from the time of trial,
and
deliver us from evil.
For
the kingdom, the power,
and
the glory are yours,
now
and for ever. Amen.
The Breaking of the Bread
Creator of
all,
you gave us
golden fields of wheat,
whose many
grains we have gathered
and made
into this one bread.
So may your Church be gathered
from the ends of the earth
The gifts of God for the people of God.
Thanks
be to God.

The Sending Forth of the
Community
The Prayer after Communion
God of abundance,
with
this bread of life and cup of salvation
you
have united us with Christ,
making
us one with all your people.
Now
send us forth in the power of your Spirit,
so
that we may proclaim your redeeming love
to
the world and continue forever
Glory to God,
whose
power, working in us,
can
do infinitely more
than
we can ask or imagine.
Glory
to God from generation to generation,
in
the Church and in Christ Jesus,
for
ever and ever. Amen.
