Opening Hymn

‘Wash, O God, Our Sons and Daughters’  Common Praise #35

The Greeting

For all the saints
who went before us,
who have spoken to our hearts
and touched us with your faire,
we praise you, O God.

For all the saints
who live beside us,
whose weaknesses and strengths
are woven with our own,
we praise you, O God.

For all the saints
who live beyond us,
who challenge us
to change the world with them,
we praise you O God. [i]

The Hymn of Praise

‘Glory, in the Highest Glory’  Common Praise #366

The Collect of the Day

Let us pray.

God of the ages,
your saints who lived in faithful service
surround your throne and praise you night and day.
May we, your saints on earth, join our voices with theirs
to proclaim your rule of righteousness and peace,
which comes to us through Jesus Christ
now and for ever.  Amen. [ii]

The Proclamation of the Word

The First Reading

A reading from Revelation (7.9-17).

            7.9 After this I looked, and there was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, robed in white, with palm branches in their hands.  10 They cried out in a loud voice, saying, “Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb!”  11 And all the angels stood around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshipped God, 12 singing, “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honour and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen.”

            13 Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, “Who are these, robed in white, and where have they come from?”  14 I said to him, “Sir, you are the one that knows.”  Then he said to me, “These are they who have come out of the great ordeal; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.  15 For this reason they are before the throne of God, and worship him day and night within his temple, and the one who is seated on the throne will shelter them.  16 They will hunger no more, and thirst no more; the sun will not strike them, nor any scorching heat;  17 for the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of the water of life, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”

Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church.
Thanks be to God.

The Psalm

Psalm 34.1-10, 22 from Songs for the Holy One.

Refrain (sung twice):  Sing for joy to the Holy One!

I must bless the Holy One at all times,
with sacred psalms always on my lips.
For the Holy One my soul sings for joy.
May the poor and afflicted hear and rejoice.
Magnify the Holy One with me;
let us exalt the Holy Name together.

I turned to the Holy One, who answered me
and from all my terrors delivered me.
Look to God!  Be radiant!
Do not let your faces be ashamed!
This poor person called to the Holy One,
who answered and saved me from all affliction.
The holy angels surround those who are reverent
and rescue them.

Refrain:  Sing for joy to the Holy One!

How wonderful is the Holy One!
Taste and see!
Happy are those who seek refuge there.
Reverence the Creator, you holy people;
those who do lack for nothing.
Young lions may lack food and starve,
but those who turn to the Holy One lack nothing.

Refrain:  Sing for joy to the Holy One!

The Holy One redeems the lives of God’s servants.
None who seek refuge in the Holy One shall be ruined.

Refrain:  Sing for joy to the Holy One!

The Second Reading

A reading the First Letter of John (3.1-3).

            3.1 See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are.  The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.  2 Beloved, we are God’s children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed.  What we do know is this:  when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is.  3 And all who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure.

Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church.
Thanks be to God.

The Gospel

The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew (5.1-12).
Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

            5.1 When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him.  2 Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying:

            3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

            4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

            5 “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.

            6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.

            7 “Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.

            8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

            9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.

            10 “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

            11 “Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.  12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”

The Gospel of Christ.
Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

The Homily

The Apostles’ Creed

Let us confess the faith of our baptism.

I believe in God,
the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit
and born of the Virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting.  Amen.

Prayer over the Gifts

Let us pray.

Holy and mighty God,
we give you thanks for the triumph of Christ
in the loves of all his saints.
Receive all we offer you this day,
and help us, like them,
to run our course with faith,
so that we may come to your eternal kingdom.
We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen. [iii]

The Thanksgiving at the Table

The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Blessed are you, gracious God,
creator of heaven and earth;
in the multitude of your saints
you have surrounded us
with so great a cloud of witnesses,
that we, rejoicing in their fellowship,
may run with patience the race that is set before us,
and together with them receive the crown of glory
that never fades away.
Therefore with angels and archangels
and with all who have served you in every age,
we raise our voices to proclaim the glory of your name.

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest. [iv]

We give thanks to you, Lord our God,
for the goodness and love
you have made known to us in creation;
in calling Israel to be your people;
in your Word spoken through the prophets;
and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus your Son.

For in these last days you sent him
to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary,
to be the Saviour and Redeemer of the world.
In him, you have delivered us from evil,
and made us worthy to stand before you.
In him, you have brought us out of error into truth,
out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

On the night he was handed over
to suffering and death, a death he freely accepted,
our Lord Jesus Christ took bread;
and when he had given thanks to you,
he broke it, and gave it to his disciples,
and said, “ Take, eat:  this is my body which is given for you.
Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine;
and when he had given thanks,
he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you:
this is my blood of the new covenant,
which is shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sins.
Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore, holy and gracious God, according to his command,
we remember his death,
we proclaim his resurrection,
we await his coming in glory;

and we offer our sacrifice
of praise and thanksgiving to you, Lord of all;
presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.
We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts,
so that they may be the sacrament of the body of Christ
and his blood of the new covenant.
Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice,
so that we, made acceptable in him,
may be sanctified by the Holy Spirit.

In the fullness of time, reconcile all things in Christ,
and make them new, and bring us to that city of light
where you dwell with all your sons and daughters;
through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation,
the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation;
by whom, and with whom, and in whom,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours,
almighty Father, now and for ever.  Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

As our Saviour taught us, let us pray,
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial,
and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours,
now and for ever.  Amen. [v]

The Breaking of the Bread

Creator of all,
you gave us golden fields of wheat,
whose many grains we have gathered
and made into this one bread.
So may your Church be gathered
from the ends of the earth
into your kingdom.

This are the gifts of God for the people of God.
Thanks be to God.

whose power, working in us,
can do infinitely more
