Praise
‘Blessed Be the
God of Israel’ Common Praise #11 (sung to #508)
Collect
Let us pray.
Holy
One of Israel,
whose Son was revealed in majesty
before he suffered death upon the
cross:
give us grace to perceive his glory
so that we may be strengthened to
suffer with him
and be changed into his likeness, from
glory to glory;
who is alive and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit
The
Proclamation of the Word
First Reading
A reading from the
Second Book of Kings (2.1-12).
1 Now when the Lord was about to take Elijah up to
heaven by a whirlwind, Elijah and Elisha were on their way from Gilgal. 2 Elijah said to Elisha, “Stay
here; for the Lord has sent me as
far as Bethel.” But Elisha said, “As the
Lord lives, and as you yourself
live, I will not leave you.” So they
went down to Bethel. 3 The
company of prophets who were in Bethel came out to Elisha, and said to him, “Do
you know that today the Lord will
take your master away from you?” And he
said, “Yes, I know; keep silent.”
4 Elijah said to him,
“Elisha, stay here; for the Lord
has sent me to Jericho.” But he said,
“As the Lord lives, and as you
yourself live, I will not leave you.” So
they came to Jericho. 5 The
company of prophets who were at Jericho drew near to Elisha, and said to him,
“Do you know that today the Lord
will take your master away from you?”
And he answered, “Yes, I know; be silent.”
6 Then Elijah said to
him, “Stay here; for the Lord has
sent me to the Jordan.” But he said, “As
the Lord lives, and as you
yourself live, I will not leave you.” So
the two of them went on. 7
Fifty men of the company of prophets also went, and stood at some distance from
them, as they both were standing by the Jordan.
8 Then Elijah took his mantle and rolled it up, and struck
the water; the water was parted to the one side and to the other, until the two
of them crossed on dry ground.
9
When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, “Tell me what I may do for you,
before I am taken from you.” Elisha
said, “Please let me inherit a double share of your spirit.” 10 He responded, “You have asked a
hard thing; yet, if you see me as I am being taken from you, it will be granted
you; if not, it will not.” 11
As they continued walking and talking, a chariot of fire and horses of fire
separated the two of them, and Elijah ascended in a whirlwind into heaven. 12 Elisha kept watching and crying
out, “Father, father! The chariots of
Israel and its horsemen!” But when he
could no longer see him, he grasped his own clothes and tore them in two
pieces.

The Psalm
Psalm 50 with the refrain from Songs for the Holy One
Refrain
(sung twice): Show
us the way of salvation, O Holy One.
1 The Lord, the God of gods,
has spoken *
and has called the earth from the
rising of the sun to its setting.
2 Out of Zion, perfect in its beauty, *
God reveals the divine glory.
Refrain: Show
us the way of salvation, O Holy One.
3 Our God will come and will
not keep silence; *
before whom there is a consuming
flame,
and round about whom a raging storm.
4 God calls the heavens and the earth from above *
to witness the judgement of this people.
Refrain: Show
us the way of salvation, O Holy One.
5 “Gather before me my loyal
followers, *
those who have made a covenant with
me
and sealed it with sacrifice.”
6 Let the heavens declare the rightness of the cause of God; *
for God, God alone, is judge.
Refrain: Show
us the way of salvation, O Holy One.
Second Reading
A reading from the
Second Letter of Paul to the Corinthians (4.3-6).
3 And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are
perishing. 4 In their case
the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them
from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of
God. 5 For we do not proclaim
ourselves; we proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and ourselves as your slaves for
Jesus’ sake. 6 For it is the
God who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” who has shone in our hearts to
give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus
Christ.

Spirit is saying to the Church.

‘Blessed Jesus, At

The Gospel
The Lord be with
you.
And also with you.
The Holy Gospel of
our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark (9.2-9).
Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
2 Six days later, Jesus
took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain apart,
by themselves. And he was transfigured
before them, 3 and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no one
on earth could bleach them. 4
And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, who were talking with Jesus. 5 Then Peter said to Jesus,
“Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you,
one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” 6
He did not know what to say, for they were terrified. 7 Then a cloud overshadowed them,
and from the cloud there came a voice, “This is my Son, the Beloved; listen to
him!” 8 Suddenly when they
looked around, they saw no one with them any more, but only Jesus.
9 As they were coming down the
mountain, he ordered them to tell no one about what they had seen, until after
the Son of Man had risen from the dead.
The Gospel of
Christ.
Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
The Sermon
An Affirmation of
Faith
Let us affirm the faith of our baptism.
I believe in
God, the Father almighty,
creator of
heaven and earth.
I believe in
Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,
who was
conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the
virgin Mary,
suffered under
Pontius Pilate,
was crucified,
died, and was buried;
he descended
to the dead.
On the third
day he rose again;
he ascended
into heaven,
he is seated
at the right hand of the Father,
and he will
come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in
the Holy Spirit,
the holy
catholic church,
the communion
of saints,
the
forgiveness of sins,
the
resurrection of the body,
and the life
everlasting. Amen.

Prayer over the Gifts
God of all
creation,
all you have made is good,
and your love endures forever.
You bring forth bread from the earth
and fruit from the vine.
Nourish us with these gifts,
so that we might be for the world
signs of your gracious presence in Jesus Christ,
our Saviour and Lord. Amen. [ii]
Thanksgiving at the
Table
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Lift up your
hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks
to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.
Blessed are you,
gracious God,
creator of heaven
and earth,
because in the
mystery of the Word made flesh
you have caused a
new light to shine in our hearts,
to give knowledge
of salvation
in the face of
your Son Jesus Christ our Lord.
Now with angels
and archangels
and the whole
company of heaven,
we lift our voices
to proclaim the
glory of your name. [iii]
Holy, holy, holy Lord,
God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Holy God, you
alone are holy, you alone are God.
The universe declares
your praise:
beyond the stars,
beneath the sea;
within each cell;
with every breath.
We praise you, O God.
Generations bless
your faithfulness:
through the water;
by night and day; across the wilderness;
out of exile; into
the future.
We bless you, O God.
We give you thanks
for your dear Son:
at the heart of
human life; near to those who suffer;
beside the sinner;
among the poor; with us now.
We thank you, O God.
In the night in
which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread,
and gave thanks;
broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying:
Take and eat; this
is my body, given for you.
Do this for the
remembrance of me.
Again, after
supper, he took the cup, gave thanks,
and gave it for
all to drink, saying:
This cup is the
new covenant in my blood,
shed for you and
for all people for the forgiveness of sin.
Do this for the
remembrance of me.
Remembering his
love for us on the way,
at the table, and
to the end,
we proclaim the
mystery of faith.
Christ has died.
Christ is risen. Christ will come
again.
We pray for the
gift of your Spirit:
in our gathering;
within this meal;
among your people;
throughout the world.
Blessing, praise,
and thanks to you, holy God,
through Christ
Jesus, by your Spirit,
in your church,
without end. Amen. [v]
The Lord’s Prayer
As our Saviour
taught us, let us pray,
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial,
and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours,
The Breaking of the
Bread
We break the bread
of life,
and that life is
the light of the world
God here among us,
light in the midst of us,
bring us to light and life.
The gifts of God
for the people of God.
Thanks be to God.

The
Sending Forth of the Community
Prayer after Communion
All your works
praise you, O Lord.
And your faithful servants bless you.
Gracious God,
we thank you for feeding us
with the body and blood of your Son Jesus Christ.
May we, who share his body, live his risen life;
we, who drink his cup, bring life to others;
we, whom the Spirit lights, give light to the world.
Keep us firm in the hope you have set before us,
so that we and all your children shall be free,
and the whole earth live to praise your name;
through Christ our Lord. Amen. [vii]
