The Collect of the Day

Let us pray.

Almighty God,
the resplendent light of your truth
shines from the mountain top into our hearts.
Transfigure us by your beloved Son,
and illumine the world with your image,
through Jesus Christ, our Saviour and Lord,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and forever.  Amen. [ii]

The Proclamation of the Word

The First Reading:  2 Kings 2.1-12

A reading from the Second Book of Kings.

2.1 Now when the Lord was about to take Elijah up to heaven by a whirlwind, Elijah and Elisha were on their way from Gilgal.  2 Elijah said to Elisha, “Stay here; for the Lord has sent me as far as Bethel.”  But Elisha said, “As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.”  So they went down to Bethel.  3 The company of prophets who were in Bethel came out to Elisha, and said to him, “Do you know that today the Lord will take your master away from you?”  And he said, “Yes, I know; keep silent.”

4 Elijah said to him, “Elisha, stay here; for the Lord has sent me to Jericho.”  But he said, “As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.”  So they came to Jericho.  5 The company of prophets who were at Jericho drew near to Elisha, and said to him, “Do you know that today the Lord will take your master away from you?”  And he answered, “Yes, I know; be silent.”

6 Then Elijah said to him, “Stay here; for the Lord has sent me to the Jordan.”  But he said, “As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.”  So the two of them went on.  7 Fifty men of the company of prophets also went, and stood at some distance from them, as they both were standing by the Jordan.  8 Then Elijah took his mantle and rolled it up, and struck the water; the water was parted to the one side and to the other, until the two of them crossed on dry ground.

9 When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, “Tell me what I may do for you, before I am taken from you.”  Elisha said, “Please let me inherit a double share of your spirit.”  10 He responded, “You have asked a hard thing; yet, if you see me as I am being taken from you, it will be granted you; if not, it will not.”  11 As they continued walking and talking, a chariot of fire and horses of fire separated the two of them, and Elijah ascended in a whirlwind into heaven.  12 Elisha kept watching and crying out, “Father, father!  The chariots of Israel and its horsemen!”  But when he could no longer see him, he grasped his own clothes and tore them in two pieces.

Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church.
Thanks be to God.

The Psalm:  Psalm 50.1-6 from Songs for the Holy One

Refrain (sung twice):  Show us the way of salvation, O Holy One.

Our holy God has spoken
and proclaimed to the world from east to west.
Out of Zion God shines forth in radiant beauty,
coming not in silence, but as a consuming fire,
a mighty tempest raging all around.

Refrain:  Show us the way of salvation, O Holy One.

O Holy One, you summon heaven above
and the whole world to judge your people.
You say, “Gather my faithful people,
who have covenanted with me by sacrifice.
Let the heavens declare my faithful justice.”
Surely our God is our judge!

Refrain:  Show us the way of salvation, O Holy One.

The Second Reading:  2 Corinthians 4.3-6

A reading from Paul’s Second Letter to the Corinthians.

4.3 And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing.  4 In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.  5 For we do not proclaim ourselves; we proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and ourselves as your slaves for Jesus’ sake.  6 For it is the God who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church.
Thanks be to God.

The Hymn before the Gospel

‘Be Thou My Vision’  Common Praise #505 vv. 1, 2

The Gospel:  Mark 9.2-9

The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark.
Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

9.2 Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain apart, by themselves.  And he was transfigured before them, 3 and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no one on earth could bleach them.  4 And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, who were talking with Jesus.  5 Then Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”  6 He did not know what to say, for they were terrified.  7 Then a cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud there came a voice, “This is my Son, the Beloved; listen to him!”  8 Suddenly when they looked around, they saw no one with them any more, but only Jesus.

9 As they were coming down the mountain, he ordered them to tell no one about what they had seen, until after the Son of Man had risen from the dead.

The gospel of Christ.
Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

‘Be Thou My Vision’  Common Praise #505 vv. 3, 4

The Sermon

The Affirmation of Faith

Let us confess the faith of our baptism.

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting.  Amen. [iii]

The Prayer over the Gifts

Let us pray.

Holy God,
receive all we offer you this day,
and bring us to that radiant glory
which we see in the transfigured face
of Jesus your Beloved.  Amen. [iv]

The Thanksgiving at the Table

The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.

We give you thanks and praise, almighty God,
through your Beloved,  Jesus Christ,
our Saviour and Redeemer.
He is your living Word,
through whom you have created all things.

By the power of the Holy Spirit he took flesh from the Virgin Mary
and shared our human nature.
He lived and died as one of us,
to reconcile us to you, the God and Creator of all.

In fulfilment of your will
he stretched out his hands in suffering,
to bring release to those who place their hope in you;
and so he won for you a holy people.

He chose to bear our griefs and sorrows,
and to give us his life on the cross,
so that he might shatter the chains of evil and death,
and banish the darkness of sin and despair.
By his resurrection he brings us into the light of your presence.

Now with all creation we raise our voices to proclaim the glory of your name.

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest. [v]

Holy and gracious God, accept our praise,
through your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ;
who on the night he was handed over to suffering and death,
took bread and gave you thanks, saying,
“Take, and eat:  this is my body which is broken for you.”
In the same way he took the cup, saying,
“This is my blood which is shed for you.
When you do this, you do it in memory of me.”

Remembering, therefore, his death and resurrection,
we offer you this bread and this cup,
giving thanks that you have made us worthy
to stand in your presence and serve you.

We ask you to send your Holy Spirit
upon the offering of your holy Church.
Gather into one all who share in these sacred mysteries,
filling them with the Holy Spirit
and confirming their faith in the truth,
so that together we may praise you and give you glory
through your Servant, Jesus Christ.

All glory and honour are yours,
Author of creation and Word of redemption,
with the Spirit of wisdom in the holy Church,
now and for ever.  Amen. [vi]

The Lord’s Prayer

As our Saviour taught us, let us pray.

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial,
and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours,
now and forever.  Amen. [vii]

The Breaking of the Bread

God of glory,
you nourish us with bread from heaven,
fill us with your Holy Spirit,
so that your light may shine in all the world. [viii]

These are the gifts of God for the people of God.
Thanks be to God.

The Sending Forth of the Community

The Prayer after Communion

Let us pray.

Radiant God,
with our eyes we have seen your salvation,
and in this meal we have feasted on your grace.
May your Word take flesh in us,
so that we may be your holy people,
revealing your glory made known to us
in Jesus the Christ.  Amen. [ix]

Glory to God,
whose power, working in us,
can do infinitely more
than we can ask or imagine.
Glory to God from generation to generation,
in the Church and in Christ Jesus,
for ever and ever.  Amen. [x]

The Closing Hymn

‘Alleluia, Song of Gladness’  Evangelical Lutheran Worship #318

who has called us in life and light.
