The Gathering of the Community

Entrance Hymn

‘Come, Ye Faithful, Raise the Strain’  Common Praise #215 vv. 1, 2, 4, 5

Greeting

Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God,
the fountain of living water,
the rock who gave us birth,
our light and our salvation. [i]

There is one body and one Spirit,
there is one hope in God’s call to us;
one Lord, one faith, one baptism,
one God and Father of all.

Canticle

‘Glory, Glory in the Highest’  Common Praise #366

Collect of the Day

Let us pray.

Lord of the church,
you call a broken people around your table:
in times of disagreement teach us to listen,
loose us from prejudice
and bind us to your way of forgiving grace;
through Jesus Christ,
who stands at the heart of our gathering.  Amen. [ii]

The Proclamation of the Word of God

The First Reading

A Reading from Exodus (12.1-4).

The Lord said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt:  This month shall mark for you the beginning of months; it shall be the first month of the year for you.  Tell the whole congregation of Israel that on the tenth of this month they are to take a lamb for each family, a lamb for each household.  If a household is too small for a whole lamb, it shall join its closest neighbour in obtaining one; the lamb shall be divided in proportion to the number of people who eat of it.

Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church.
Thanks be to God.

The Psalm of the Day

Psalm 149 with the refrain from Songs for the Holy One

Refrain (sung twice):  Hallelujah!  Hallelujah!  Hallelujah!

1  Hallelujah!
Sing to the Lord a new song; *
sing the praises of God in the congregation of the faithful.
2  Let Israel rejoice in their maker; *
let the children of Zion be joyful in their sovereign.
3  Let them praise the name of the Lord in the dance; *
let them sing praise to God with timbrel and harp.
4  For the Lord takes pleasure in this people *
and adorns the poor with victory.

Refrain:  Hallelujah!  Hallelujah!  Hallelujah!

5  Let the faithful rejoice in triumph; *
let them be joyful on their beds.
6  Let the praises of God be in their throat *
            and a two-edged sword in their hand;
7  to wreak vengeance on the nations *
            and punishment on the peoples;
8  to bind their rulers in chains *
            and their nobles with links of iron;
9  to inflict on them the judgement decreed; *
this is glory for all God’s faithful people.  Hallelujah!

Refrain:  Hallelujah!  Hallelujah!  Hallelujah!

The Second Reading

A Reading from the Letter to the Romans (13,8-14).

Owe no one anything, except to love one another; for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.  The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery; You shall not murder; You shall not steal; You shall not covet”; and any other commandment, are summed up in this word, “Love your neighbour as yourself.”  Love does no wrong to a neighbour; therefore, love is the fulfilling of the law.

Besides this, you know what time it is, how it is now the moment for you to wake from sleep.  For salvation is nearer to us now than when we became believers; the night is far gone, the day is near.  Let us then lay aside the works of darkness and put on the armor of light; let us live honourably as in the day, not in reveling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in quarrelling and jealousy.  Instead, put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.

Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church.
Thanks be to God.

Hymn before the Gospel

‘Forgive Our Sins As We Forgive’  Common Praise #614

The Gospel

The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew (18.15-20).
Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

[Jesus said,] “If another member of the church sins against you, go and point out the fault when the two of you are alone.  If the member listens to you, you have regained that one.  But if you are not listened to, take one or two others along with you, so that every word may be confirmed by the evidence of two or three witnesses.  If the member refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if the offender refuses to listen even to the church, let such a one be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector.  Truly I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.  Again, truly I tell you, if two of you agree on earth about anything you ask, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven.  For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them.”

The Gospel of Christ.
Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Prayers for the Candidates

The Deacon invites the Community to pray for the Candidates.

Let us now pray for this person who are to receive the sacrament of new birth.

The Person appointed leads the Prayers.

Deliver her, O Lord, from the way of sin and death.
Lord, hear our prayer.

Open her heart to your grace and truth.
Lord, hear our prayer.

Fill her with your holy and life-giving Spirit.
Lord, hear our prayer.

Teach her to love others in the power of the Spirit.
Lord, hear our prayer.

Send her into the world in witness to your love.
Lord, hear our prayer.

Bring her to the fullness of your peace and glory.
Lord, hear our prayer.

Grant, O Lord,
that all who are baptized
into the death of Jesus Christ your Son
may live in the power of his resurrection
and look for him to come again in glory;
who lives and reigns now and for ever.  Amen.

Thanksgiving over the Water

The Presider gives thanks for the gift of water.

The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Holy God, holy and merciful, holy and mighty,
you are the river of life, you are the everlasting wellspring,
you are the fire of rebirth.

Glory to you for oceans and lakes, for rivers and streams.
Honour to you for cloud and rain, for dew and snow.
Your waters are below us, around us, above us:  our life is born in you.
You are the fountain of resurrection.

Praise to you for your saving waters:
Noah and the animals survive the flood,
Hagar discovers your well.
The Israelites escape through the sea, and they drink from your gushing rock.
Naaman washes his leprosy away,
and the Samaritan woman will never be thirsty again.

At this font, Holy God, we pray:
Praise to you for the water of baptism
and for your Word that saves us in this water.
Breathe your Spirit into all who are gathered here and into all creation.
Illumine our days.  Enliven our bones.  Dry our tears.
Wash away the sin within us, and drown the evil around us.

Satisfy all our thirst with your living water, Jesus Christ, our Saviour,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.  Amen. [iii]

The Baptismal Covenant

The Presider and the Deacon share in asking the questions of the Covenant.

Do you believe in God the Father?
I believe in God,
the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.

Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God?
I believe in Jesus Christ,
God’s only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit?
I believe in God the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting.  Amen.

Will you continue in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers?
I will, with God’s help.

Will you persevere in resisting evil and, whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord?
I will, with God’s help.

Will you proclaim by word and example the good news of God in Christ?
I will, with God’s help.

Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbour as yourself?
I will, with God’s help.

Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being?
I will, with God’s help.

Will you strive to safeguard the integrity of God’s creation, and respect, sustain and renew the life of the Earth?
I will, with God’s help.

The Baptism

Violet Jane, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

Violet Jane, you are sealed by the Holy Spirit in baptism
and marked as Christ’s own for ever.  Amen.

Heavenly Father,
we thank you that be water and the Holy Spirit
you have bestowed upon this your servant
the forgiveness of sin,
and have raised her to the new life of grace.
Sustain her, O Lord, in your Holy Spirit.
Give her an inquiring and discerning heart,
the courage to will and to persevere,
a spirit to know and to love you,
and the gift of joy and wonder
in all your works.  Amen.

The Giving of the Light

Receive the light of Christ,
to show that you have passed from darkness to light.
Let your light so shine before others
that they may see your good works
and glorify your Father in heaven.

Let us welcome the newly baptized.
We receive you into the household of God.
Confess the faith of Christ crucified,
proclaim his resurrection,
and share with us in his eternal priesthood.

The Exchange of the Peace

May the peace of the Lord be always with you.
And also with you.

The Holy Communion

Offertory Hymn

‘God the Creator’  Common Praise #445

The Prayer over the Gifts

Let us pray.

Blessed are you, O God,
maker of all things.
Through your goodness
you have blessed us with these gifts:
our selves, our time and our possessions.
Use us, and what we have gathered,
in feeding the world with your love,
through the one who gave himself for us,
Jesus Christ, our Saviour and Lord.  Amen. [iv]

The Thanksgiving at the Table

The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.

It is indeed right
that we should praise you, gracious God,
for you created all things.
You formed us in your own image:
male and female you created us.
When we turned away from you in sin,
you did not cease to care for us,
but opened a path of salvation for all people.
You made a covenant with Israel,
and through your servants Abraham and Sarah
gave the promise of a blessing to all nations.
Through Moses you led your people
from bondage into freedom;
through the prophets
you renewed your promise of salvation.
Therefore, with them and with all your saints
who have served you in every age,
we give thanks and raise our voices
to proclaim the glory of your name.

Holy, holy, holy Lord,
God of power and might.
Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest. [v]

Holy God, source of life and goodness,
all creation rightly gives you praise.
In the fullness of time,
you sent your Son Jesus Christ,
to share our human nature,
to live and die as one of us,
to reconcile us to you,
the God and Creator of all.
He healed the sick
and ate and drank with outcasts and sinners;
he opened the eyes of the blind
and proclaimed the good news of your kingdom
to the poor and to those in need.
In all things he fulfilled your gracious will.

On the night he freely gave himself to death,
our Lord Jesus Christ took bread,
and when he had given thanks to you,
he broke it, and gave it to his disciples,
and said, “Take, eat:
this is my body which is given for you.
Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine;
and when he had given thanks,
he gave it to them,
and said, “Drink this, all of you:
this is my blood of the new covenant,
which is shed for you and for all people
for the forgiveness of sins.
Whenever you drink it,
do this for the remembrance of me.”

Gracious God,
his perfect sacrifice
destroys the power of sin and death;
by raising him to life
you give us life for evermore.

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:
Christ has died.  Christ is risen.  Christ will come again.

Recalling his death,
proclaiming his resurrection,
and looking for his coming again in glory,
we offer you, God of abundance, this bread and this cup.
Send your Holy Spirit upon us
and upon these gifts,
so that all who eat and drink at this table
may be one body and one holy people,
a living sacrifice in Jesus Christ, our Lord.

Through Christ, with Christ, and in Christ,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
all glory is yours, Holy One of Israel,
now and for ever.  Amen. [vi]

The Lord’s Prayer

As our Saviour taught us, let us pray,
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial,
and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours,
now and for ever.  Amen. [vii]

The Breaking of the Bread

The bread which we break
is a sharing in the body of Christ.
We being many are one bread, one body,
for we all share in the one bread. [viii]

The gifts of God for the people of God.
Thanks be to God.

Communion

Hymn after Communion

‘Where Charity and Love Prevail’  Common Praise #487

The Sending Forth of the Community

The Prayer after Communion

God of unity and truth,
encourage the fervent,
enlighten the doubtful
and bring back the wayward.
Gather us all together in mutual love,
so that our prayer may be pleasing to you.
Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God for ever and ever.  Amen. [ix]

Glory to God,
whose power, working in us,
can do infinitely more
than we can ask or imagine.
Glory to God from generation to generation,
in the Church and in Christ Jesus,
for ever and ever.  Amen.
