‘The Glory of Our
God Was Seen’ Common Praise #219
Introductory Responses
Blessed be the holy
and undivided Trinity:
the Author of
creation,
the Word of
redemption,
and the Spirit of
wisdom,
one God, now and
for ever. Amen.
In peace, let us
pray to the Lord.
Lord, hear and have
mercy.
Lord, hear and have mercy.
For the peace from
above, and for our salvation, let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, hear and have
mercy.
Lord, hear and have mercy.
For the peace of
the whole world, for the well-being of the church of God,
and for the unity
of all, let us pray to the Lord.
Lord, hear and have
mercy.
Lord, hear and have mercy.
For this holy
house, and for all who offer here their worship and praise,
let us pray to the
Lord.
Lord, hear and have
mercy.
Lord, hear and have mercy.
Help, save, comfort
and defend us, gracious Lord.
Lord, hear and have
mercy.
Lord, hear and have mercy.
The Collect of the Day
Let us pray.
God of heaven and
earth,
you reveal your wisdom to the childlike;
may we learn from your Son humility of heart,
so that we find refreshment and rest
even as we shoulder the cross of Christ;
who, with you and the Holy Spirit,
The
Proclamation of the Word
The First Reading
A reading from the
prophet Zechariah (9.9-12).
9.9 Rejoice greatly, O
daughter Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter
Jerusalem! Lo, your king comes to you; triumphant
and victorious is he, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a
donkey. 10 He will cut off
the chariot from Ephraim and the war-horse from Jerusalem; and the battle bow
shall be cut off, and he shall command peace to the nations; his dominion shall
be from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth.
11 As for you also,
because of the blood of my covenant with you, I will set your prisoners free
from the waterless pit. 12
Return to your stronghold, O prisoners of hope; today I declare that I will
restore to you double.
Hear what the
Spirit is saying to the Church.
Thanks be to God.
The Psalm
Psalm 145.8-14 from Songs for the Holy One.
Refrain (sung twice): Great
and loving our you, O Holy One. We
praise you with all our hearts.
You are gracious
and merciful,
slow to anger, and
filled with faithful love.
You, O Holy One, are good to everyone;
compassion abounds in your every act.
All your works praise
you;
your loving, faithful people bless you.
Refrain: Great
are loving are you, O Holy One. We
praise you with all our hearts.
They talk of the
glory of your majesty
and speak of the
honour of your reign,
to teach all
peoples your mighty power
and the majesty of
your reign.
Your reign is for all eternity,
your dominion for all generations.
You are truthful in
all your words;
your works show
faithful love.
You lift up all who fall,
and restore those who are prostrate.
Refrain: Great
are loving are you, O Holy One. We
praise you with all our hearts.
The Second Reading
A reading from Paul’s
Letter to the Romans (7.17-25a).
7.17 But in fact it is no longer I that do it, but sin that dwells
within me. 18 For I know that
nothing good dwells within me, that is, in my flesh. I can will what is right,
but I cannot do it. 19 For I
do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I do. 20 Now if I do what I do not want,
it is no longer I that do it, but sin that dwells within me.
21 So I find it to be a
law that when I want to do what is good, evil lies close at hand. 22 For I delight in the law of God
in my inmost self, 23 but I see in my members another law at war
with the law of my mind, making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my
members. 24 Wretched man that
I am! Who will rescue me from this body
of death? 25 Thanks be to God
through Jesus Christ our Lord!
Hear what the
Spirit is saying to the Church.
Thanks be to God.

The Gospel
The Lord be with
you.
And also with you.
The Holy Gospel of
our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew (11.16-19, 25-30).
Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
11.16 [Jesus said to the
crowd,] “But to what will I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the
marketplaces and calling to one another, 17 ‘We played the flute for
you, and you did not dance; we wailed, and you did not mourn.’ 18 For John came neither eating
nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon’; 19 the Son of Man came
eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of
tax collectors and sinners!’ Yet wisdom
is vindicated by her deeds.”
25 At that time Jesus
said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden
these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to
infants; 26 yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. 27 All things have been handed over
to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one
knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal
him.
28 “Come to me, all you
that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn
from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your
souls. 30 For my yoke is
easy, and my burden is light.”
The Gospel of
Christ.
Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Confession and Absolution
Come, let us return
to the Lord and say:
God of compassion
and mercy,
in our sin we have avoided your call.
Our love for you is like a morning cloud,
like the dew that goes away early.
Have mercy on us;
deliver us from judgement;
bind up our wounds and revive us;
in Jesus Christ our Redeemer. Amen.
[iv]
May the God of love
forgive you and
free you from your sins,

Prayer over the Gifts
Let us pray.
Giver of life,
receive
our sacrifice of praise,
and
strengthen us
for the
perfect freedom of your service,
The Thanksgiving at the Table
The Lord be with you.
And also
with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift
them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is
right to give our thanks and praise.
We give you thanks and praise, almighty God, for the
gift of a world full of wonder, and for our life which comes from you. By your power you sustain the universe.
Glory to
you for ever and ever.
You created us to love you with all our heart, and
to love each other as ourselves, but we rebel against you by the evil that we
do.
In Jesus, your Servant, you bring healing to our
world and gather us into one great family.
Therefore, with all who serve you on earth and in heaven, we praise your
wonderful name, as we sing,
Holy,
holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your
glory. Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed
is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest. [vii]
We give you thanks and praise, loving Creator,
because in sending Jesus, your Beloved, to us you showed us how much you love
us. He cares for the poor and the
hungry. He suffers with the sick and the
rejected.
Betrayed and forsaken, he did not strike back but
overcame hatred with love. On the cross
he defeated the power of sin and death.
By raising him from the dead you show us the power of your love to bring
new life to all your people.
Glory to
you for ever and ever.
On the night before he gave up his life for us,
Jesus, at supper with his friends, took bread, gave thanks to you, broke it,
and gave it to them, saying, “Take this, all of you, and eat it: this is my body which is given for you.”
After supper, Jesus took the cup of wine, said the
blessing, gave it to his friends, and said, “Drink this, all of you: this is the cup of my blood, the blood of the
new and eternal covenant, which is shed for you and for all people. Do this in memory of me.”
Glory to
you for ever and ever.
Gracious God, with this bread and wine we celebrate
the death and resurrection of Jesus, and we offer ourselves to you in him.
Send your Holy Spirit on us and on these gifts, so that we may know the presence of
Jesus in the breaking of bread, and share in the life of the family of your
children.
Glory to
you for ever and ever.
Giver of life, you call us to be your servants; fill
us with the courage and love of Jesus, so that all the world may gather in joy
at the table of your kingdom.
We sing your praise, God our Creator, through Jesus,
our Lord, in the power of the Holy Spirit, now and for ever.
The Lord’s Prayer
As our Saviour
taught us, let us pray,
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial,
and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours,
now and for ever. Amen.
The Breaking of the Bread
We break this bread
to share in the
body of Christ.
We, being many, are one body,
for we all share in the one bread.
These are the gifts
of God for the people of God.
Thanks be to God.
