Greeting and Litany
The Presider
greets the Community from the door to the Nave.
Blessed are you,
Lord God,
our maker and
redeemer:
this is your world and we are your people;
come among us and save us.
During the
procession to the Sanctuary, the biddings of the Litany are intoned and the
response is sung using Common Worship #707.
When we willfully
misuse your gifts of creation:
Holy God, holy and mighty, holy immortal one,
have mercy upon us.
When we see the
ill-treatment of others
and do not go to
their aid:
Holy God, holy and mighty, holy immortal one,
have mercy upon us.
When we condone
evil and dishonesty
and fail to strive
for justice:
Holy God, holy and mighty, holy immortal one,
have mercy upon us.
When we hear the
good news of Christ
but fail to share
it with others:
Holy God, holy and mighty, holy immortal one,
have mercy upon us.
When we do not
love you with all our hearts
nor our neighbours
as ourselves:
Holy God, holy and mighty, holy immortal one,
have mercy upon us.
The Presider then
says the following,
May the God of
love and power
forgive us and
free us from our sins,
heal and
strengthen us by the Spirit,
and raise us to
new life in Christ our Lord. Amen. [i]
The Collect of the Day
Let us pray.
Steadfast God,
you reach out to us in mercy.
When we rebel against your holy call
and walk in disobedience,
soften our hearts with the warmth of your love,
so that we may know your Son
alive within us, redeeming us,
The Proclamation of the Word
The First Reading
A reading from Numbers
(21.4-9)
4 From Mount Hor they set
out by the way to the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom; but the people
became impatient on the way. 5
The people spoke against God and against Moses, “Why have you brought us up out
of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For
there is no food and no water, and we detest this miserable food.” 6 Then the Lord sent poisonous serpents among the people, and they bit
the people, so that many Israelites died. 7 The people came to Moses and
said, “We have sinned by speaking against the Lord
and against you; pray to the Lord to
take away the serpents from us.” So
Moses prayed for the people. 8
And the Lord said to Moses, “Make
a poisonous serpent, and set it on a pole; and everyone who is bitten shall
look at it and live.” 9 So
Moses made a serpent of bronze, and put it upon a pole; and whenever a serpent
bit someone, that person would look at the serpent of bronze and live.

The Second Reading
A reading from the
Letter to the Ephesians (2.1-10).
1 You were dead through
the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once lived, following the
course of this world, following the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit
that is now at work among those who are disobedient. 3 All of us once lived among them
in the passions of our flesh, following the desires of flesh and senses, and we
were by nature children of wrath, like everyone else. 4 But God, who is rich in mercy,
out of the great love with which he loved us 5 even when we were
dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ — by grace you
have been saved — 6 and raised us up with him and seated us with him
in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 so that in the ages to
come he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us
in Christ Jesus. 8 For by
grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is
the gift of God — 9 not the result of works, so that no one may
boast. 10 For we are what he
has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared
beforehand to be our way of life.

The Affirmation of Faith
Let us declare our
faith in God.
We believe in God the Creator of all,
from whom every family
in heaven and on earth is named.
We believe in God the Word of redemption,
who lives in our hearts through faith
and fills us with love and compassion.
We believe in God the Spirit of wisdom,
who strengthens us
with power from on high.

Commissioning of the Trustees, Wardens and
Church Committee
At the end of the
Intercessions, thanksgivings and petitions, the newly-elected Trustees, Wardens
and Members of the Church Committee come forward. The Presider says the following.
Sisters and
brothers in Christ, we are all baptized by the one Spirit into one body
and given gifts
for a variety of ministries for the common good.
Let us now
recognize and affirm the ministry to which these persons have been called.
They shall work
among us as Trustees, Wardens and Members of the Church Committee to share in
the leadership of this Parish and to nurture the life, order and vitality of
our community so that God’s love may grow here and in all the places where we
live, work and serve.
The Presider
addresses the newly-elected as follows.
Will you, as long
as you are engaged in the office to which you have been elected,
perform it with
care, to the honour of God and the benefit of the church?
I will, with God’s help.
Will you be
regular and constant in worship?
I will, with God’s help.
Will you continue
in the breaking of the bread and the prayers?
I will, with God’s help.
Will you study those
things that may make you a more able minister of Christ?
I will, with God’s help.
May the Lord
enable you and uphold you in this ministry.
May we find joy together in the service of Christ.

O eternal God,
the foundation of all wisdom
and the source of all courage:
enlighten with your grace

and skill; you made us the stewards of creation. Glory
to you for ever and ever.
But we turn
against you, and betray your trust; and we turn against one another. Again and again you call us to return. Through the prophets and sages you reveal
your righteous law. In the fullness of
time you sent your Son, born of a woman, to be our Saviour. He was wounded for our transgressions, and
bruised for our iniquities. By his death
he opened to us the way of freedom and peace.

Therefore we
praise you, joining with the heavenly chorus, with prophets, apostles, and
martyrs, and with those in every generation who have looked to you in hope, to
proclaim with them your glory, in their unending hymn.

God of power and might,

Blessed are you,
Lord our God, for sending us Jesus, the Christ, who on the night he was handed
over to suffering and death, took bread, said the blessing, broke the bread,
gave it to his friends, and said, “Take this, and eat it: this is my body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”
In the same way,
after supper, he took the cup of wine; he gave you thanks, and said, “Drink
this, all of you: this is my blood of
the new covenant, which is shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness
of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this
for the remembrance of me.” Glory to you for ever and ever.
Gracious God, we
recall the death of your Son Jesus Christ, we proclaim his resurrection and
ascension, and we look with expectation for his coming as Lord of all the
nations. We who have been redeemed by
him, and made a new people by water and the Spirit, now bring you these
gifts. Send your Holy Spirit upon us and
upon this offering of your Church, so that we who eat and drink at this holy table
may share the divine life of Christ our Lord.
Glory to you for ever and ever.
Pour out your
Spirit upon the whole earth and make it your new creation. Gather your Church together from the ends of
the earth into your kingdom, where peace and justice are revealed, so that we,
with all your people, of every language, race, and nation, may share the
banquet you have promised; through Christ, with Christ, and in Christ, all
honour and glory are yours, creator of all.

The Lord’s Prayer
As our Saviour taught
us, let us pray,
Our Father in heaven,

communion in Christ’s body once broken.
