Praise #469 (sung to #38)
Greeting
The Presider greets the Community.
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,
and the love of God
and the communion of the Holy Spirit
be with you all.
And also with you.
The Deacon or an Assisting Minister then says
God of compassion,
you raise us to life in the Spirit:
Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.
You bring pardon and peace
to the broken in heart:
Christ, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
You make the torn and divided
one by your Spirit:
Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy. [i]
Then the Presider says
God of love,
bring us back to yourself,
forgive us our sins
and assure us of your eternal love
in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. [ii]
Let us now praise the God
who gives us new life
through the reconciling love of Christ
and the work of the Spirit.

Collect of the Day
Let us pray.
O God, Spirit of righteousness,
you temper judgement with
mercy.
Help us to live the covenant
written upon our hearts
so that when Christ appears
we may be found worthy
to be received into your
gracious presence;
through the same Jesus Christ
our Lord. Amen. [iii]
The Proclamation of the Word of God
First Reading
A Reading from Jeremiah (31.27-34).
The days are surely
coming, says the Lord,
when I will sow the house of Israel and the house of Judah with the seed of
humans and the seed of animals. And just
as I have watched over them to pluck up and break down, to overthrow, destroy,
and bring evil, so I will watch over them to build and to plant, says the Lord.
In those days they
shall no longer say: “The parents have
eaten sour grapes,
and the children’s teeth are set on edge.”
But all shall die for
their own sins; the teeth of everyone who eats sour grapes shall be set on
edge.
The
days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with
the house of Israel and the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant that I made
with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land
of Egypt — a covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, says the Lord. But this is the covenant that I will make with
the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord:
I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and
I will be their God, and they shall be my people. No longer shall they teach one another, or say
to each other, “Know the Lord,” for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the
greatest, says the Lord; for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin
no more.
Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church.
Thanks be to God.
The Psalm
Psalm 119.97-104 with the Refrain from Songs for the Holy One
Refrain (sung
twice): Holy One, teach us your way, and help us to walk in it.
97
Oh, how I love your law! *
All
the day long it is in my mind.
98
Your commandment has made me wiser than
my enemies, *
and it is always with me.
99
I have more understanding than all my teachers, *
for
your decrees are my study.
100
I am wiser than the elders, *
because I observe your commandments.
Refrain: Holy One,
teach us your way, and help us to walk in it.
101
I restrain my feet from every evil way, *
that
I may keep your word.
102
I do not shrink from your judgements, *
because you yourself have taught me.
103
How sweet are your words to my taste! *
They
are sweeter than honey to my mouth.
104
Through your commandments I gain
understanding; *
therefore I hate every lying way.
Refrain: Holy One,
teach us your way, and help us to walk in it.
The Second Reading
A Reading
from the Second Letter to Timothy (3.14-4.5).
But as for
you, continue in what you have learned and firmly believed, knowing from whom
you learned it, and how from childhood you have known the sacred writings that
are able to instruct you for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All scripture is inspired by God and is useful
for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,
so that everyone who belongs to God may be proficient, equipped for every good
work.
In the presence of God and of Christ
Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing
and his kingdom, I solemnly urge you: proclaim
the message; be persistent whether the time is favorable or unfavorable;
convince, rebuke, and encourage, with the utmost patience in teaching. For the time is coming when people will not
put up with sound doctrine, but having itching ears, they will accumulate for
themselves teachers to suit their own desires, and will turn away from
listening to the truth and wander away to myths. As for you, always be sober, endure suffering,
do the work of an evangelist, carry out your ministry fully.
Hear what the
Spirit is saying to the Church.
Thanks be to God.

The Gospel
The Lord be
with you.
And also with you.
The Holy
Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke (18.1-8).
Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
Then Jesus told them a parable about
their need to pray always and not to lose heart. He said, “In a certain city there was a judge
who neither feared God nor had respect for people. In that city there was a widow who kept coming
to him and saying, ‘Grant me justice against my opponent.’ For a while he refused; but later he said to
himself, ‘Though I have no fear of God
and no respect for anyone, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will
grant her justice, so that she may not wear me out by continually coming.’” And the Lord said, “Listen to what the unjust
judge says. And will not God grant
justice to his chosen ones who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long in helping them? I tell you, he will quickly grant justice to
them. And yet, when the Son of Man
comes, will he find faith on earth?”
The Gospel of
Christ.
Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
The Sermon
An Affirmation of
Faith
The Deacon or
another Assisting Minister says to the People
Let us
confess the faith of our baptism.
I believe in God, the Father
almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s
only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy
Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was
buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand
of the Father,
and he will come again to judge
the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen. [iv]

The Prayer over
the Gifts
Let us pray.
Eternal God,
your word inspires our faith.
May we who offer you our praise
trust you in all things.
We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ the
Lord. Amen.
The Thanksgiving
at the Table
The Lord be
with you.
And also with you.
Lift up your
hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give
thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.
We give you
thanks and praise, almighty God,
through your
beloved Son, Jesus Christ,
our Saviour
and Redeemer.
He is your
living Word
through whom
you have created all things.
By the power
of the Holy Spirit
he took flesh
of the Virgin Mary
and shared
our human nature.
He lived and
died as one of us,
to reconcile
us to you,
the God and
Father of all.
In
fulfillment of your will
he stretched
out his hands in suffering,
to bring
release to those who place their hope in you,
and so he won
for you a holy people.
He chose to
bear our griefs and sorrows,
and to give
us his life on the cross,
that he might
shatter the chains of evil and death,
and banish
the darkness of sin and despair.
By his
resurrection
he brings us
into the light of your presence.
Now with all
creation we raise our voices
to proclaim
the glory of your name.
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of
power and might.
Heaven and earth are full of
your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the
name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest. [v]
Holy and gracious God,
accept our praise,
through your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ;
who on the night he was handed over
to suffering and death,
took bread and gave you thanks,
saying, “Take, and eat:
this is my body which is broken for you.”
In the same way he took the cup,
saying, “This is my blood which is shed for you.
When you do this, you do it in memory of me.”
Remembering, therefore, his death and resurrection,
we offer you this bread and this cup,
giving thanks that you have made us worthy
to stand in your presence and serve you.
We ask you to send your Holy Spirit
upon the offering of your holy Church.
Gather into one
all who share in these sacred mysteries,
filling them with the Holy Spirit
and confirming their faith in the truth,
that together we may praise you
and give you glory
through your Servant, Jesus Christ.
All glory and honour are yours,
Father and Son,
with the Holy Spirit
in the holy Church,
now and for ever. Amen. [vi]
The Lord’s Prayer
As our Saviour taught us, let us pray,
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin
against us.
Save us from the time of trial,
and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours,
now and for ever. Amen. [vii]
The Breaking of the
Bread
Creator of
all,
you gave us golden
fields of wheat,
whose many
grains we have gathered
and made into
this one bread.
So may your Church be gathered
from the ends of the earth
into your reign of justice and peace. [viii]
The gifts of God for the people of God.
Thanks be to God.

Prayer after
Communion
Let us pray.
God of peace,
you have nourished us in this sacrament
with the body and blood of Christ.
May we who have taken holy things
keep faith in our hearts and lives,
in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord. Amen.
Glory to God,
whose power working in us,
can do infinitely more
than we can ask or imagine.
Glory to God from generation to generation,
in the Church and in Christ Jesus,
for ever and ever. Amen.
