You have made known your salvation
and reveal your justice in the sight of the nations.
Kyrie eleison.  Christe eleison.  Kyrie eleison.

Collect of the Day

Let us pray.

Living God,
you are the giver of wisdom,
guiding those who seek your ways
to choose the good.
Mercifully grant that your people,
who feast on the true bread of heaven,
may have eternal life in Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen. [ii]

The Proclamation of the Word of God

The First Reading

A reading from the First Book of Kings (2.10-12; 3.3-14).

2.10 Then David slept with his ancestors, and was buried in the city of David.  11 The time that David reigned over Israel was forty years; he reigned seven years in Hebron, and thirty-three years in Jerusalem.  12 So Solomon sat on the throne of his father David; and his kingdom was firmly established.

3.3 Solomon loved the Lord, walking in the statutes of his father David; only, he sacrificed and offered incense at the high places.  4 The king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there, for that was the principal high place; Solomon used to offer a thousand burnt offerings on that altar.  5 At Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night; and God said, “Ask what I should give you.”  6 And Solomon said, “You have shown great and steadfast love to your servant my father David, because he walked before you in faithfulness, in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart toward you; and you have kept for him this great and steadfast love, and have given him a son to sit on his throne today.  7 And now, O Lord my God, you have made your servant king in place of my father David, although I am only a little child; I do not know how to go out or come in.  8 And your servant is in the midst of the people whom you have chosen, a great people, so numerous they cannot be numbered or counted.  9 Give your servant therefore an understanding mind to govern your people, able to discern between good and evil; for who can govern this your great people?”

10 It pleased the Lord that Solomon had asked this.  11 God said to him, “Because you have asked this, and have not asked for yourself long life or riches, or for the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern what is right,  12 I now do according to your word.  Indeed I give you a wise and discerning mind; no one like you has been before you and no one like you shall arise after you.  13 I give you also what you have not asked, both riches and honor all your life; no other king shall compare with you.  14 If you will walk in my ways, keeping my statutes and my commandments, as your father David walked, then I will lengthen your life.”

Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church.
Thanks be to God.

The Psalm of the Day

Psalm 111 with a refrain from Songs for the Holy One

Refrain (sung twice):  With all our hearts we praise you, O Holy One.

1 Hallelujah!
I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart, *
in the assembly of the upright, in the congregation.
2 Great are the deeds of the Lord! *
They are studied by all who delight in them.

Refrain:  With all our hearts we praise you, O Holy One.

3 O Lord, your work is full of majesty and splendour, *
and your righteousness endures for ever.
4 You make your marvellous works to be remembered; *
you are gracious and full compassion.
5 You give food to those who fear you; *
you are ever mindful of your covenant.
6 You have shown your people the power of your works *
in giving them the lands of the nations.

Refrain:  With all our hearts we praise you, O Holy One.

7 The works of your hands are faithfulness and justice; *
            all your commandments are sure.
8 They stand fast for ever and ever, *
because they are done in truth and equity.
9 You send redemption to your people;
you commanded your covenant for ever; *
holy and awesome is your name.
10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; *
            those who act accordingly have a good understanding;
the praise of the Lord endures for ever.

Refrain:  With all our hearts we praise you, O Holy One.

The Second Reading

A reading from the Letter to the Ephesians (5.15-20).

15 Be careful then how you live, not as unwise people but as wise, 16 making the most of the time, because the days are evil.  17 So do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.  18 Do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery; but be filled with the Spirit, 19 as you sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, singing and making melody to the Lord in your hearts, 20 giving thanks to God the Father at all times and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church.
Thanks be to God.

Hymn before the Gospel

Alleluia.  Alleluia.  Alleluia.
Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me and I in them, says the Lord.
Alleluia.  Alleluia.  Alleluia. [iii]

The Gospel

The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John (6.51-58).
Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

[Jesus said,] “51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven.  Whoever eats of this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.”

52 [Jesus’ opponents] then disputed among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”  53 So Jesus said to them, “Very truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.  54 Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life, and I will raise them up on the last day; 55 for my flesh is true food and my blood is true drink.  56 Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them.  57 Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever eats me will live because of me.  58 This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like that which your ancestors ate, and they died. But the one who eats this bread will live forever.”

The Gospel of Christ.
Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

The Sermon

The Apostles’ Creed

Let us confess the faith of our baptism.

I believe in God,
the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ,
God’s only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting.  Amen.

The Exchange of the Peace

May the peace of the Lord be always with you.
And also with you.

Offertory Hymn

‘Let All Creation Bless the Lord’  Common Praise #419

The Prayer over the Gifts

Let us pray.

God of all creation,
all you have made is good,
and your love endures forever.
You bring forth bread from the earth
and fruit from the vine.
Nourish us with these gifts,
so that we might be for the world
signs of your gracious presence in Jesus Christ,
our Saviour and Lord.  Amen. [iv]

The Thanksgiving at the Table

The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.

We give you thanks and praise, almighty God,
through your beloved Son, Jesus Christ,
our Saviour and Redeemer.
He is your living Word,
through whom you have created all things.

By the power of the Holy Spirit
he took flesh of the Virgin Mary
and shared our human nature.
He lived and died as one of us,
to reconcile us to you,
the God and Father of all.

In fulfillment of your will
he stretched out his hands in suffering,
to bring release to those who place their hope in you;
and so he won for you a holy people.

He chose to bear our griefs and sorrow,
and to give up his life on the cross,
so that he might shatter the chains of evil and death,
and banish the darkness of sin and despair.
By his resurrection
he brings us into the light of your presence.

Now with all creation we raise our voices
to proclaim the glory of your name.

Holy, holy, holy Lord,
God of power and might.
Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest. [v]

Holy and gracious God,
accept our praise,
through your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ;
who on the night he was handed over
to suffering and death,
took bread and gave you thanks,
saying, “Take, and eat:
this is my body which is broken for you.”
In the same way he took the cup,
saying, This is my blood which is shed for you.
When you do this, you do it in memory of me.”

Remembering, therefore, his death and resurrection,
we offer you this bread and this cup,
giving thanks that you have made us worthy
to stand in your presence and serve you.

We ask you to send your Holy Spirit
upon the offering of your holy Church.
Gather into one
all who share in these sacred mysteries,
filling them with the Holy Spirit
and confirming their faith in the truth,
so that together we may praise you
and give you glory
through your Servant, Jesus Christ.

All glory and honour are yours,
Author of life and Word of redemption,
with the Holy Spirit
in the holy Church,
now and for ever.  Amen. [vi]

The Lord’s Prayer

As our Saviour taught us, let us pray,
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial,
and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours,
now and for ever.  Amen. [vii]

The Breaking of the Bread

Be known to us, Lord Jesus,
in the breaking of the bread.
Be known to us, Lord Jesus,
in the breaking of the bread.
The bread which we break, alleluia,
is the communion of the body of Christ.
Be known to us, Lord Jesus,
in the breaking of the bread.
One body are we, alleluia,
for though many, we share one bread.
Be known to us, Lord Jesus,
in the breaking of the bread. [viii]

The gifts of God for the people of God.
Thanks be to God.
