Greeting

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,
and the love of God,
and the communion of the Holy Spirit
be with you all.
And also with you.

Kyrie [i]

May your loving mercy come to us, O Lord,
and your salvation according to your word.
Kyrie eleison.  Christe eleison.  Kyrie eleison. [ii]

Your word is a lantern to our feet
and a light to our path.
Kyrie eleison.  Christe eleison.  Kyrie eleison. [iii]

O let our mercy come to us,
so that we may live fully and freely.
Kyrie eleison.  Christe eleison.  Kyrie eleison. [iv]

Collect of the Day

Let us pray.

God of the prophets,
in every age you send the word of truth,
familiar yet new.
Let us not be counted
among those who lack faith,
but give us vision to see Christ in our midst
and to welcome your saving word.
Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ,
who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God for ever and ever.  Amen. [v]

The Proclamation of the Word of God

The First Reading

A reading from the Second Book of Samuel (5.1-5, 9-10).

1 Then all the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron, and said, “Look, we are your bone and flesh.  2 For some time, while Saul was king over us, it was you who led out Israel and brought it in.  The Lord said to you:  It is you who shall be shepherd of my people Israel, you who shall be ruler over Israel.”  3 So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron; and King David made a covenant with them at Hebron before the Lord, and they anointed David king over Israel.  4 David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years.  5 At Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months; and at Jerusalem he reigned over all Israel and Judah thirty- three years.

9 David occupied the stronghold, and named it the city of David.  David built the city all around from the Millo inward.  10 And David became greater and greater, for the Lord, the God of hosts, was with him.

Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church.
Thanks be to God.

The Psalm of the Day

Psalm 48 with a refrain from Songs for the Holy One

Refrain (sung twice):  We joy in your love, O loving God.

1 Great is the Lord, and highly to be praised; *
in whose city is the holy hill of God.
2 Beautiful and lofty, the joy of all the earth, is the hill of Zion, *
the very centre of the world and the city of the great sovereign.

Refrain:  We joy in your love, O loving God.

3 God is in its citadels *
and is known to be its sure refuge.
4 Behold, the rulers of the earth assembled *
            and marched forward together.
5 They looked and were astounded; *
they retreated and fled in terror.
6 Trembling seized them there; *
they writhed like a woman in childbirth,
7 like ships of the sea *
when the east wind shatters them.
8 As we have heard, so have we seen,
in the city of the Lord of hosts, in the city of our God; *
God has established it for ever.

Refrain:  We joy in your love, O loving God.

9 We have waited in silence on your loving-kindness, O God, *
in the midst of your temple.
10 Your praise, like your name, O God, reaches to the world’s end; *
your hand is full of justice.
11 Let Mount Zion be glad and the cities of Judah rejoice, *
            because of your judgements.
12 Make the circuit of Zion; walk round about it; *
count the number of its towers.
13 Consider well its bulwarks; examine its strongholds; *
that you may tell those who come after.
14 This God is our God for ever and ever, *
who shall be our guide for evermore.

Refrain:  We joy in your love, O loving God.

The Second Reading

A reading from Paul’s Second Letter to the Corinthians (12.2-10).

2 I know a person in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven — whether in the body or out of the body I do not know; God knows.  3 And I know that such a person — whether in the body or out of the body I do not know; God knows — 4 was caught up into Paradise and heard things that are not to be told, that no mortal is permitted to repeat.  5 On behalf of such a one I will boast, but on my own behalf I will not boast, except of my weaknesses.  6 But if I wish to boast, I will not be a fool, for I will be speaking the truth.  But I refrain from it, so that no one may think better of me than what is seen in me or heard from me, 7 even considering the exceptional character of the revelations.  Therefore, to keep me from being too elated, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment me, to keep me from being too elated.  8 Three times I appealed to the Lord about this, that it would leave me, 9 but he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.”  So, I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me.  10 Therefore I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities for the sake of Christ; for whenever I am weak, then I am strong.

Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church.
Thanks be to God.

Hymn before the Gospel

‘Alleluia’  Common Praise #714 (sung three times)

The Gospel

The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark (6.1-13).
Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

1 [Jesus] left that place and came to his hometown, and his disciples followed him.  2 On the sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astounded.  They said, “Where did this man get all this?  What is this wisdom that has been given to him?  What deeds of power are being done by his hands!  3 Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon, and are not his sisters here with us?”  And they took offense at him.  4 Then Jesus said to them, “Prophets are not without honour, except in their hometown, and among their own kin, and in their own house.”  5 And he could do no deed of power there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and cured them.  6 And he was amazed at their unbelief.

Then he went about among the villages teaching.  7 He called the twelve and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits.  8 He ordered them to take nothing for their journey except a staff; no bread, no bag, no money in their belts; 9 but to wear sandals and not to put on two tunics.  10 He said to them, “Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave the place.  11 If any place will not welcome you and they refuse to hear you, as you leave, shake off the dust that is on your feet as a testimony against them.”  12 So they went out and proclaimed that all should repent.  13 They cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them.

The Gospel of Christ.
Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

The Sermon

The Apostles’ Creed

Let us confess the faith of our baptism.

I believe in God,
the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ,
God’s only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting.  Amen.

The Prayer over the Gifts

Let us pray.

God of heaven and earth,
receive our sacrifice of praise,
and strength us
for the perfect freedom of your service,
through our Saviour Jesus Christ.  Amen. [vi]

The Thanksgiving at the Table

The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.

We give you thanks and praise, almighty God,
through your beloved Son, Jesus Christ,
our Saviour and Redeemer.
He is your living Word,
through whom you have created all things.

By the power of the Holy Spirit
he took flesh of the Virgin Mary
and shared our human nature.
He lived and died as one of us,
to reconcile us to you,
the God and Father of all.

In fulfillment of your will
he stretched out his hands in suffering,
to bring release to those who place their hope in you;
and so he won for you a holy people.

He chose to bear our griefs and sorrow,
and to give up his life on the cross,
so that he might shatter the chains of evil and death,
and banish the darkness of sin and despair.
By his resurrection
he brings us into the light of your presence.

Now with all creation we raise our voices
to proclaim the glory of your name.

Holy, holy, holy Lord,
God of power and might.
Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest. [vii]

Holy and gracious God,
accept our praise,
through your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ;
who on the night he was handed over
to suffering and death,
took bread and gave you thanks,
saying, “Take, and eat:
this is my body which is broken for you.”
In the same way he took the cup,
saying, This is my blood which is shed for you.
When you do this, you do it in memory of me.”

Remembering, therefore, his death and resurrection,
we offer you this bread and this cup,
giving thanks that you have made us worthy
to stand in your presence and serve you.

We ask you to send your Holy Spirit
upon the offering of your holy Church.
Gather into one
all who share in these sacred mysteries,
filling them with the Holy Spirit
and confirming their faith in the truth,
so that together we may praise you
and give you glory
through your Servant, Jesus Christ.

All glory and honour are yours,
Author of life and Word of redemption,
with the Holy Spirit
in the holy Church,
now and for ever.  Amen. [viii]

The Lord’s Prayer

As our Saviour taught us, let us pray,
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial,
and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours,
now and for ever.  Amen. [ix]

The Breaking of the Bread

Be known to us, Lord Jesus,
in the breaking of the bread.
Be known to us, Lord Jesus,
in the breaking of the bread.
The bread which we break, alleluia,
is the communion of the body of Christ.
Be known to us, Lord Jesus,
in the breaking of the bread.
One body are we, alleluia,
for though many, we share one bread.
Be known to us, Lord Jesus,
in the breaking of the bread. [x]

The gifts of God for the people of God.
Thanks be to God.
