The Fifth sunday after Pentecost
28 June 2015

The Gathering of the Community

Entrance Hymn

‘Sing a New Song Unto the Lord’  Common Praise #312

Greeting

Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God,
the fountain of living water,
the rock who gave us birth,
our light and our salvation. [i]

There is one body and one Spirit,
there is one hope in God’s call to us;
one Lord, one faith, one baptism,
one God and Father of all.

Canticle

‘Laudete Dominum’  Common Praise #313 (sung three times)

Collect of the Day

Let us pray.

God of hope,
you are ruler of both night and day,
guardian of those who wander in shadows.
Be new light and life
for those who live in the darkness of despair,
for those imprisoned by guilt and grief,
for those living with anxiety and depression,
so that, even where death’s grip tightens,
all may know the power of the One
who conquered fear and death.  Amen. [ii]

The Proclamation of the Word of God

The First Reading

A Reading from the Second Book of Samuel (1.1, 17-27)

1 After the death of Saul, when David had returned from defeating the Amalekites, David remained two days in Ziklag.

17 David intoned this lamentation over Saul and his son Jonathan.  18 (He ordered that The Song of the Bow be taught to the people of Judah; it is written in the Book of Jashar.)  He said:  19 Your glory, O Israel, lies slain upon your high places!  How the mighty have fallen!  20 Tell it not in Gath, proclaim it not in the streets of Ashkelon; or the daughters of the Philistines will rejoice, the daughters of the uncircumcised will exult.  21 You mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew or rain upon you, nor bounteous fields!  For there the shield of the mighty was defiled, the shield of Saul, anointed with oil no more.  22 From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the mighty, the bow of Jonathan did not turn back, nor the sword of Saul return empty.  23 Saul and Jonathan, beloved and lovely!  In life and in death they were not divided; they were swifter than eagles, they were stronger than lions.  24 O daughters of Israel, weep over Saul, who clothed you with crimson, in luxury, who put ornaments of gold on your apparel.  25 How the mighty have fallen in the midst of the battle!  Jonathan lies slain upon your high places.  26 I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan; greatly beloved were you to me; your love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women.  27 How the mighty have fallen,
and the weapons of war perished.”

Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church.
Thanks be to God.

The Psalm of the Day

Psalm 130 with a refrain from Songs for the Holy One

Refrain (sung twice):  We hope in God with all our heart.

1 Out of the depths *
            have I called you, O Lord;
2 Lord, hear my voice; *
let your ears consider well the voice of my supplication.

Refrain:  We hope in God with all our heart.

3 If you, Lord, were to note what is done amiss, *
            O Lord, who could stand?
4 For there is forgiveness with you; *
            therefore you shall be feared.
5 I wait for you, O Lord; my soul waits for you; *
in your word is my hope.
6 My soul waits for you, O Lord, *
more than sentinels for the morning,
more than sentinels for the morning.

Refrain:  We hope in God with all our heart.

7 O Israel, wait for the Lord, *
            for with the Lord there is mercy;
8 with whom there is plenteous redemption, *
and who shall redeem Israel from all their sins.

Refrain:  We hope in God with all our heart.

The Second Reading

A Reading from Paul’s Second Letter to the Corinthians (8.7-15).

7 Now as you excel in everything — in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in utmost eagerness, and in our love for you — so we want you to excel also in this generous undertaking.

8 I do not say this as a command, but I am testing the genuineness of your love against the earnestness of others.  9 For you know the generous act of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich.  10 And in this matter I am giving my advice:  it is appropriate for you who began last year not only to do something but even to desire to do something — 11 now finish doing it, so that your eagerness may be matched by completing it according to your means.  12 For if the eagerness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has — not according to what one does not have.  13 I do not mean that there should be relief for others and pressure on you, but it is a question of a fair balance between 14 your present abundance and their need, so that their abundance may be for your need, in order that there may be a fair balance.

15 As it is written, “The one who had much did not have too much, and the one who had little did not have too little.”

Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church.
Thanks be to God.

Hymn before the Gospel

‘Alleluia’  Common Praise #712 (Refrain, v. 4, Refrain)

The Gospel

The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark (5.21-43).
Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

21 When Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a great crowd gathered around him; and he was by the sea.  22 Then one of the leaders of the synagogue named Jairus came and, when he saw him, fell at his feet 23 and begged him repeatedly, “My little daughter is at the point of death.  Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well, and live.”  24 So he went with him.

And a large crowd followed him and pressed in on him.  25 Now there was a woman who had been suffering from hemorrhages for twelve years.  26 She had endured much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had; and she was no better, but rather grew worse.  27 She had heard about Jesus, and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, 28 for she said, “If I but touch his clothes, I will be made well.”  29 Immediately her hemorrhage stopped; and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease.  30 Immediately aware that power had gone forth from him, Jesus turned about in the crowd and said, “Who touched my clothes?”  31 And his disciples said to him, “You see the crowd pressing in on you; how can you say, ‘Who touched me? ’”  32 He looked all around to see who had done it.  33 But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling, fell down before him, and told him the whole truth.  34 He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.”

35 While he was still speaking, some people came from the leader’s house to say, “Your daughter is dead.  Why trouble the teacher any further?”  36 But overhearing what they said, Jesus said to the leader of the synagogue, “Do not fear, only believe.”  37 He allowed no one to follow him except Peter, James, and John, the brother of James.  38 When they came to the house of the leader of the synagogue, he saw a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly.  39 When he had entered, he said to them, “Why do you make a commotion and weep? The child is not dead but sleeping.”  40 And they laughed at him.  Then he put them all outside, and took the child’s father and mother and those who were with him, and went in where the child was.  41 He took her by the hand and said to her, “Talitha cum,” which means, “Little girl, get up!”  42 And immediately the girl got up and began to walk about (she was twelve years of age).  At this they were overcome with amazement.  43 He strictly ordered them that no one should know this, and told them to give her something to eat.

The Gospel of Christ.
Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Thanksgiving over the Water

The Presider blesses the water.

The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Holy God, holy and merciful, holy and mighty,
you are the river of life, you are the everlasting wellspring,
you are the fire of rebirth.

Glory to you for oceans and lakes, for rivers and streams.
Honour to you for cloud and rain, for dew and snow.
Your waters are below us, around us, above us:  our life is born in you.
You are the fountain of resurrection.

Praise to you for your saving waters:
Noah and the animals survive the flood,
Hagar discovers your well.
The Israelites escape through the sea, and they drink from your gushing rock.
Naaman washes his leprosy away,
and the Samaritan woman will never be thirsty again.

At this font, Holy God, we pray:
Praise to you for the water of baptism
and for your Word that saves us in this water.
Breathe your Spirit into all who are gathered here and into all creation.
Illumine our days.  Enliven our bones.  Dry our tears.
Wash away the sin within us, and drown the evil around us.

Satisfy all our thirst with your living water, Jesus Christ, our Saviour,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.  Amen. [iii]

The Baptismal Covenant

The Presider and the Deacon share in asking the questions of the Covenant.

Do you believe in God the Father?
I believe in God,
the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.

Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God?
I believe in Jesus Christ,
God’s only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit?
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting.  Amen.

Will you continue in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers?
I will, with God’s help.

Will you persevere in resisting evil and, whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord?
I will, with God’s help.

Will you proclaim by word and example the good news of God in Christ?
I will, with God’s help.

Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbour as yourself?
I will, with God’s help.

Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being?
I will, with God’s help.

Will you strive to safeguard the integrity of God’s creation, and respect, sustain and renew the life of the Earth?
I will, with God’s help.

The Baptism

Blythe Penelope, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

Blythe Penelope, you are sealed with the Spirit in baptism
and marked as Christ’s own for ever.  Amen.

Heavenly Father,
we thank you that be water and the Holy Spirit
you have bestowed upon this your servant
the forgiveness of sin,
and have raised her to the new life of grace.
Sustain her, O Lord, in your Holy Spirit.
Give her an inquiring and discerning heart,
the courage to will and to persevere,
a spirit to know and to love you,
and the gift of joy and wonder
in all your works.  Amen.

The Giving of the Light

Receive the light of Christ,
to show that you have passed from darkness to light.
Let your light so shine before others
that they may see your good works
and glorify your Father in heaven.

Let us welcome the newly baptized.
We receive you into the household of God.
Confess the faith of Christ crucified,
proclaim his resurrection,
and share with us in his eternal priesthood.

The Exchange of the Peace

May the peace of the Lord be always with you.
And also with you.

The Holy Communion

Offertory Hymn

‘We Are Called’  Evangelical Lutheran Worship #720

The Prayer over the Gifts

Let us pray.

Holy God, gracious and merciful,
you bring forth food from the earth
and nourish your whole creation.
Turn our hearts toward those
who hunger in any way,
so that all may know your care;
and prepare us now
to feast on the bread of life,
Jesus Christ, our Saviour and Lord.  Amen. [iv]

The Thanksgiving at the Table

The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Blessed are you, gracious God,
creator of heaven and earth;
you are the source of light and life for all your creation,
you made us in your own image,
and call us to new life in Jesus Christ our Saviour.
Therefore we praise you,
joining our voices to proclaim the glory of your name. [v]

Holy, holy, holy Lord,
God of power and might.
Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest. [vi]

Holy God, you alone are holy, you alone are God.
The universe declares your praise:
beyond the stars; beneath the sea; within each cell; with every breath.
We praise you, O God.

Generations bless your faithfulness:
through the water; by night and day;
across the wilderness; out of exile; into the future.
We bless you, O God.

We give you thanks for your dear Son:
at the heart of human life; near to those who suffer;
beside the sinner; among the poor; with us now.
We thank you, O God.

In the night in which he was betrayed,
our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks;
broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying:
Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.
Do this for the remembrance of me.

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks,
and gave it for all to drink, saying:
This cup is the new covenant in my blood,
shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin.
Do this for the remembrance of me.

Remembering his love for us on the way,
at the table, and to the end,
we proclaim the mystery of faith.
Christ has died.  Christ is risen.  Christ will come again.

We pray for the gift of your Spirit:
in our gathering; within this meal;
among your people; throughout the world.

Blessing, praise and thanks to you, holy God,
through Christ Jesus, by your Spirit,
in your church, without end.
Amen. [vii]

The Lord’s Prayer

As our Saviour taught us, let us pray,
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial,
and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours,
now and for ever.  Amen. [viii]

The Breaking of the Bread

Creator of all,
you gave us golden fields of wheat,
whose many grains we have gathered
and made into this one bread.
So may your Church be gathered
from the ends of the earth
into your reign of justice and peace. [ix]

The gifts of God for the people of God.
Thanks be to God.

you have united us with Christ,

so that we may proclaim your redeeming love
to the world and continue forever
in the risen life of Jesus Christ, our Redeemer.  Amen. [x]

Glory to God,
whose power, working in us,
can do infinitely more
than we can ask or imagine.
